Psalms 18:2  The LORD is my rockmy fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvationmy stronghold.

Matthew 7:24  Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

2 Samuel 22:47   The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior.

One of my favorite names for the Lord, is the Rock.  Life has a way of tossing us this way and that.  There are days when we feel like we are a ship upon a stormy sea; or a leaf dancing in the wind. We don’t feel like we have control, we are helpless before the storms that come against us.  Have you ever just wanted a rock to hold onto?  Jesus is that rock!  We can count on Him to be our anchor through the rough and stormy seas.

The Psalmist writes of the Lord as a rock, fortress, deliverer, refuge, shield, horn of my salvation and stronghold.   Additional meanings would include defense, safety and security. So many in our current era are plagued by fear and anxiety.  More people are taking sedating and mental health drugs than ever before.  We are battered by the bad news spin cycle and more information than we could ever process in a healthy manner.

Do your best to step back and do a FAST from social media and the information tsunami that bombards our senses daily.   Take some time to reflect on the Lord’s attributes as the antidote to modern life.  He is our rock.  He is immovable, infallible, a shield, a fortress and a refuge in times of trouble.

Matthew takes a different perspective on the word Rock for the Lord.  He calls the man who heeds God’s word and puts it into practice as wise.  Matthew uses the Rock to mean a firm foundation.   A house is only as good as its foundation. If the most beautiful and desirable house is built on a weak foundation, it will not withstand the winds and rain that will surely come.   Other verses in the bible refer to our houses (lives) being built on either the rock or sand. Choose to build your life on the rock.  We do this by giving God control of the reins.  We choose the advice found in His word to guide us, realizing that His ways are high above our own ways.

The prophet, Samuel speaks of God the Rock when he is moved to praise.  He lifts his voice to praise a God that lives.  Our God is exalted, He is our Rock and Savior.

Life is full of uncertainties, let us hold fast to the Rock.  He is able and He is always watching over us.  We may not have control, but we have something much better, we have God!  Let’s build our lives on the firm foundation.  We have no need to feel insecure or threatened. We are children of the King, who is the Rock.   When the storms come and the waters rage, our house will stand firm.  Seek God through his word.  Read your bible like your sanity depends on it. The answers can all be found there.  Entertainment, alcohol, pills, distractions and procrastination will never take the place of knowing how much God loves you.  And, since He is for us, who can stand against us?  There is no other God like our God, he is exalted and worthy of our praise.

Dear God, we are made of the dust.  We are calling on you to be our Rock.  Hold us close through seasons of trial.  Remind us that you are always with us in the presence of your Holy Spirit.  Teach us to pull away from the trappings of social media and to refocus our attention on you.  You alone can bring us security and peace.  You are unchanging, you are perfect, and you love us, the way we are. Send us more of your Holy Spirit so that we may transform our minds and be renewed by your love.  As we draw closer to you, Lord, Our Rock, we will find peace that flows like a quiet river in our souls.

In Jesus Name,

Amen.
