1 Timothy 2:1-2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
Ezra 6:10 …so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the well-being of the king and his sons.
Proverbs 21:1 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him.
Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Romans 13:4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
Jeremiah 29:7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
Psalm 106:13 But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold.
When I first heard the admonition that we are to pray for our president and others in authority over us, I was not happy. I was not happy with our president at that time and it was challenging. But, as I began to pray and allowed the Holy Spirit to lead me, I started to understand the immense importance of this obligation. We are to pray Godly things for our leaders. This allows the Lord to answer the prayers of his people in great and unexpected ways. He is truly able to turn the heart of the king as he sees fit. This is to our collective benefit as we all want to lead quiet and peaceful lives. If our country prospers, we will also prosper.
God has an easy to understand lesson for us in Micah 6:8. We are to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. We can pray this for our president as well. This is exactly the kind of behavior that causes us to have favor with God, we want our nation to be under God’s favor—not wrath! Presidents and kings are only allowed to rule through God’s authority. He is never surprised by election results.
We are to pray for the President’s well-being. Ezra 6:10 I pray for his good health, and also the good health of his wife and family. The president’s wife is also important to include in our prayers as a wife is sometimes referred to as the neck that turns the head. What a unique role she has to support her husband and offer Godly wisdom and advise to him. Let’s pray for them to have discernment to hear God’s counsel and wisdom to follow where He leads. We will never understand a situation fully the way the president does. He has access and authority over information that is not publicized. Many report to him daily that bring new and dangerous reports for him to decipher and address. There many people who counsel a president and we can pray that they will counsel wisely so that our president may carry out God’s agenda.
Father God, we pray our President will act justly, love mercy and walk humbly before you. We pray for his good health and that of his wife and children. As he starts the day, Lord, we pray he will seek your face and follow your leading. Please surround him Lord with wise, shrewd and Godly counselors, as we face many frightening challenges in our country. Father, you have seen fit for Mr. Trump to be our president at this time. This is your perfect will, and we long to be a praying people that are faithful to lift our president up in prayer as you expect. Allow us patience to see your plan unfold. Father, we ask you to give our president your guidance and holy discernment, Lord, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in our land.
